The College is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology on either,

A- Teaching and Academic Management

career pathway or

B - Teaching and Research

career pathway,

depending on their individual strengths and attributes.

This post requires a contribution to teaching and supervision in Psychology, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, but also across the College where required, in

addition to sharing organisational and academic administrative responsibilities.

A - Teaching and Research

This post provides a role for a candidate with research and academic potential and interest in any area of psychol! ogy. The successful candidate will be

expected to exp! and their own research activities and be capable of linking with existing research areas and teams in the College of Human and Health Sciences, the College of Medicine and with partners from Bangor and Cardiff Universities. They will also need to develop a portfolio of funded projects, as well as fruitful interactions and collaborations. The appointee will seek to operate at an international level and publish research in respected journals.

B - Teaching and Academic Management

The successful candidate will be required to contribute to an area of management in the College outside of their own area of work â€" this could be taking responsibility for student recruitment, internationalisation, employability or enhancing the student experience for example.

Main Purpose of the Post

Teaching, Scholarship and Student Support (A and B)

Both pathways will require you to:

  • Contributing to courses within the taught portfol! io, reviewing and updating own course materials and delivered sessions using the most appropriate mode of delivery.
  • Development and delivery of teaching to the appropriate standard. Assessment and quality assurance of components of the taught portfolio, within the academic unit.
This includes

a) the high quality delivery of teaching and student learning and of the overall student experience,

b) ensuring that L&T policy and procedures are adhered to.

  • Demonstrating awareness of current research and knowledge in the field and integrating this into teaching by developing practice in the light of this activity
  • Taking part in course/module and programme development
  • Responsibility for planning and managing own teaching, workload and competing priorities, and of having taken action to ensure that overall timescales are met.
  • Undertaking and Completing a professional teaching qualification
  • Mem! bers of staff are encouraged to maintain and enhance links with the pro! fessional institutions. Engaging with other academics in the field, through networking at conferences, involvement in formal groups, or participation in professional activity.
  • The development of industry/university partnerships and new research or other collaborative projects is an important part of the role.
  • Managing personal administrative tasks related to own work. Planning, prioritising and progressing own work, to fit the achievement of own priorities around the requirements of others.
  • To fully engage with the University’s Performance Enabling and Welsh Language policies
  • To promote equality and diversity ian working practices and maintain positive working relationships
  • To conduct all activities within the University’s environmental requirements as set out in its Sustainability Policy and Environmental Management System, in order to minimise individual and departmental impact

pathway will be required to carry out the following additional duties:

  • Conducting individual or collaborative research, contributing to the generation of original research outputs and to the dissemination of research findings within and outside the University.
  • Independently carrying out day-to-day research, identifying or devising appropriate research techniques.
  • Contributing to the identification of opportunities for and development of new research/third mission activity and working with more experienced colleagues to develop own research strategy.
  • Responsibility for planning and managing own research, a small research project, or a stand-alone element ! of a broader project, managing own workload and competing priorities an! d taking action to ensure that overall timescales are met.
  • Ensuring that current research is integrated into the teaching of the discipline.
Candidates appointed to

B, Teaching and Academic Management

pathway will be required to carry out the following additional duties:

  • Contributing to a task not necessarily confined to the applicant’s immediate research, teaching or scholarship activities.
  • Participating in decisions which have an on-going impact on your own team or academic unit and that have a lasting impact. Typically decisions of this kind could be described as established practice and procedure.

Essential Criteria (A and B)

1. A degree in Psychology or a Behavioural Science or equivalent

2. OUtstanding written, oral and interpersonal skills

3. Evidence of commitment to Continuing Professional Development
4. Experience of supervising undergraduate and/or postgraduate student projects

5. The ability to teach core BPS curriculum areas and to contribute to teaching in the Department of Psychology and the College of Human and Health Sciences

6. Demonstrated confidence and competence in the use of IT

Desirable Criteria

7. Awareness and appreciation of commercial developments in the subject area

8. The ability to use innovative teaching methods including e-learning

9. Previous experience of student support up to PhD level

10. Fellowship of Higher Education Academy

11. PhD in Psychology

12. Evidence of research work for publications which will contribute to the aspirations and facilities of the College, or demonstrate the potent! ial to achieve this standard of research

13. A publication rec! ord commensurate with a good level of research performance and stage of career

14. An understanding of research funding mechanisms and processes and the capacity to contribute to securing grant capture and research funds

A â€" Teaching and Research Desirable

15. Evidence of developing research objectives and proposals for own or joint research (maybe with the assistance of a mentor)

16. Evidence of making a contribution in a research team and the ability to collaborate at different levels across an organisation

B â€" Teaching and Academic Management - Essential

17. Masters qualification in Psychology

18. Evidence of the ability to lead a working group in an area of college management such as recruitment or employability etc

19. Experience of supervising undergraduate and/or postgraduate student projects
