Our client, is highly successful UK law firm with offices across the country now seek to recruit a Library & Information Services Manager for their Bristol office.
The Role:
As Library & Information Services Manager (LISM) at the firm you will:
- Develop and implement services, standards and strategic policies for the deployment of Library & Information Services within the firm.
- Market and promote the Library & Information Service and its products and services. This includes establishing and maintaining rapport with current and potential library users and representing the library at internal and external firm meetings and functions to promote the library and answer user questions.
- Manage the Library & Information Services staff (currently two practice area specific Information Officers and one Library & Information Services Assistant) including recruitment, welfare, training, personal development, and staff appraisal reporting.
- Develop library database and information services, and their provision through the firms intranet. This will include the development of the Library Managemen! t System (Soutron).
- Lead the development of the opera! tional plan for the Team and ensure that targets, and customer care requirements, are effectively met.
- Provide financial management of the Library & Information Services budget, including reporting on the budget to the HKM on a monthly basis.
- Establish guidelines for collection development that that are appropriate to the overall objectives of the firm including the development of policies and procedures to evaluate, acquire, discard, process, organise, maintain, and circulate or loan information resources.
- Oversee purchasing of new materials. Check requests for book orders and searches for bibliographic information prior to purchasing. Review materials for possible acquisition and maintain updated knowledge of new publications and resources.
- Keep updated statistics and usage records and be responsible for assessment and evaluation of library standards and services. Provide a statistical analysis report on a monthly basis to the HKM on th! e service.
- Train and assist staff in the cataloguing of resources using the Moys classification system.
- Oversee the management and maintenance of all satellite libraries.
- Take responsibility for development and delivery of the Library & Information Service training programme, including inductions, trainee development and legal research skills training.
- Undertake complex high level legal and business research to provide support with client matters and business development activities as required by members of the firm.
- Support the Business Development team in the provision of timely information in preparation for tenders and campaigns.
- With the HKM, plan and manage the Library & Information Services operations, including issues arising from the expansion of the firm to offices.
- Drive the development of post matter analysis and ensure it is consistently carried out across the firm.
- Contribute to the promot! ion of our know how system (Minerva) to drive increased usage and contr! ibution from across the entire firm.
- Manage our relationships with our external acquisitions agents, loose-leafing suppliers and any other third party suppliers as required by the HKM.
- Maintain communication with professional organizations necessary to the success and advancement of services provided in the Library & Information Service.
- Contribute, as required by the HKM, to other knowledge management activities and projects undertaken by the KM team.
The successful candidate will be a high calibre team leader with excellent communication skills and a clear vision for how to implement first-class law library information services; a highly motivated energetic self-starter who can think and act independently. They will be expected to possess a proven track record of successful strategic and operational leadership of a library at a national law firm or equivalent working environment, as well as an! understanding of customer service requirements in such a setting.
It is essential that you:
- Have a minimum of 10 years relevant experience within a library / information environment including at least 5 years in a law firm;
- Can demonstrate previous experience within a library / information service in a management role including staff management and team leadership, preferably in a law firm;
- Possess a Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) approved degree or postgraduate qualification in Librarianship or Information Science (or equivalent);
- Have previous financial management experience of planning, preparing, and controlling library budgets and all financial resources;
- Display excellent communication skills and are able to promote the library and advocate for its needs;
- Are able communicate effectively, can demonstrate commercial acumen and have experience of managing and! negotiating with suppliers and other information providers to advance ! the interests of the library;
- Understand the principles of project management and can organise people to accomplish complex tasks;
- Be comfortable working with IT and quick at learning new IT systems. Understand the practical application of creating, accessing, and managing information including databases, integrated library systems, and electronic information resources;
- Possess a practical working knowledge of copyright law, licensing issues and are aware of any other policies or legislation that may impact the Library & Information Service.
